Effective Communication (P2)


Understanding the principles of effective communication

Introduction
I have recently learnt about effective communication techniques that can help make communication more effective, informative and beneficial to both parties. As a result I learnt about the following skills and how they make communication effective. I particularly found use of technology interesting as I never knew that people find it easier learn things if you show them using computers.

General communication skills

Terminology: Depending on people you talk to, some people may not have a large knowledge of technology terminology as yourself so as a result it’s better to turn away from full jargon speech or explain in basic what the terminology means and here from their point of view on what the problem is.

Use of technology: If you’re trying to solve a problem you can use technology to your advantage for example you can use PowerPoint to create flow charts that show the person you talking to what went wrong and how you can fix this if the problem arises once more.

Interpersonal skills

Active engagement: I find that when I talk to most people you get a lot more information out of them and enthusiasm when you engage yourself in what their saying with simple nods of understanding or strong head nods to show absolute agreement in what they are saying.

Speed of response: Is very important as it shows that, either you the listener are listening to what the person is saying or if the roles in a conversation are switches, as for one that it shows that you are listening and that you do know what they are talking about and you know what they are talking about because if you remain quite after the person is speaking finished they will think that you were either not listening or you don’t understand, that is why it is important to be able to instantly respond to what the speaker has said.

Communicate in writing:

Emoticons: Emoticons are useful because when people communicate informally using text it lacks emotion and most things can be miss interpreted for example sarcasm “Ohh my day was wonderful!” could be interpreted as being positive however emoticons show exactly what you’re feeling or what other are feeling with cartoon faces J.

Proof reading: It’s important that you proof read your work, as if you’re applying for a job or writing a message to a friend they may read sentences that make no sense or contain way too many spelling mistakes or even missing punctuation making interpretation or reason for the message difficult to understand.
