Introduction
Recently we have been learning about communication barriers that may cause potential problems to effective communication and how you can solve these problems. As a result I have a bigger understanding of what communication barriers could come from the following categories.
Physical
A physical impairment could be that the potential employee could have a hearing impairment making communication difficult as the employee might not be able to hear you or may hear some of the conversation making it hard for them to understand. A solution to this is you could speak a little louder and face them at all times which gives them the chance to lip read.
Language
A Language barrier you could encounter could be that the person your interviewing may have a strong regional accent or English is their second language which could be difficult to understand. A solution to this is you could ask them to speak a little slower and ask them to repeat words that just can't quite understand or in extreme cases you may have to use a translator.
Perceptual
One perceptual barrier that could cause a future problem in a interview is if someone has a hidden agenda for example the interviewer could be offering large benefits and incentives to get you to join the company however in reality it hasn't materlised as quickly as expected . To solve this issue you would check your contract and also talk to your manager about the matter and if you failed to get anymore information you would visit your human resources department.
Cultural
A barrier to communication through culture could be that a custom of welcoming someone could be different in other countries, for example in some Asian countries to welcome someone is a bow. As a result you could create a awkward environment where your hand is still out ready receive a handshake to welcome them and they bow. To solve this you could research about the persons cultural background and customs.
Mental/Emotional
An emotional barrier that you could encounter could be that the person your talking to is stressed, as a result of this they may not be listening to what your saying or they maybe distracted with their own problem. To solve this problem you could ask them what's wrong and try to listen to what their problem is, as a result this may calm them down as they may of kept the stress inside for a while, after that you can continue to say what were saying as you have calmed them down slightly.
